November 5, 2017: Agoura Hills, CA.—-Fans of Southside Johnny and The Asbury Jukes, shed their Sunday night blues as the band took the Canyon club’s compact yet cozy stage, playing a nearly two hour set. The group, who hails from the Jersey Shore is headed by John Lyon (aka Southside Johnny) who has long been considered the grandfather of the New Jersey sound. Johnny has influenced and counter-influenced such great names as Springstein and Bon Jovi. The band’s set included both covers and original songs including one from The Jukes’ latest CD, “Soultime”
The 68 year-old rocker and his skin tight 7 piece band delivered a variety of rock, soul and blues tunes, rousing audience members to their feet or at least swaying hands and snapping fingers. The horn section provided a distinct compliment of both rhythm and melodic harmony. Although the band covered many of their hits, fans were anxious to hear all of them and blurted out requests. Responding with his acidic Jersey style sarcasm, Johnny retorted, “ I told you we’d be taking requests tonite but, I was f—ing lying!”
The Canyon Club was the final stop on the Jukes’ 3 -day California road trip. The band will be heading back to the east coast for more shows.
