Gin Blossoms

December 29, 2018  Augora Hills, Ca—-written by Gina Sigman

Alt rock fans packed into the elegant Canyon Club for an evening with the Gin Blossoms.  Lead singer Robin Wilson proved he can still croon 90’s style and then some, never missing a note on songs like Follow You Down.  Jesse Valenzuela was as impressive on guitar as he was delivering his sweetly familiar harmonies.  The rest of the band, consisting of Bill Leen, and “the Scotts”: Johnson and Hessel, added the essentials needed to complete the whole package.   The band from Tempe Arizona that began in the late 80’s has uh...to use an over-trite pun...blossomed into becoming an iconic marker of the Alt Rock movement of the 90’s and beyond.

Everybody seems to know their tunes.  This is evidenced by a following diverse in age.  Millennials to boomers rushed the stage during the last half hour to sing along with Til I Hear It From You.  As one listens to songs like Hey Jealousy, they can hear the influences that Robin has so carefully tattooed on his upper arms like David Bowie, Queen and Tom Petty.  After Robin’s table-walking and handing out signed set-lists to a couple of delighted fans, the show came to a fitting end with a Tom Petty cover song.

So what’s on the horizon for fans in 2019?  A exciting touring season for sure! The band will begin their east coast tour in February.  During a short after-show chat, Robin revealed he will be singing with the Smithereens this March at Epcot Center in Orlando, Fl.
